Fairfield Cycling Team Gears Up for Kids - 8/6/2007

LAFAYETTE, IN, August 6, 2007: It was a success all the way around! Five members from our Fairfield family along with six individuals, and five area teams took an extreme challenge in raising money for the local CASA for Kids. Riders endured a 25-Hour Cycling Challenge that successfully rose over $13,000 in donations, a record for the program.

A 300 Mile, 25-Hour Cycling Challenge began with opening ceremonies kicking off the event on Friday, July 27th at 5:30 P.M at Calvary Baptist Church in West Lafayette, Indiana. Former Purdue football player, Travis Dorsch rode along side team Fairfield riders, Delmer Hensley, Randy Thies, Don McDole, Bob Taylor, and Ted Tincher for the relay portion of the ride. Also participating were teams from Alcoa, PEFCU, Purdue and Wabash Cycling Club. The Relay consisted of members from each team riding 60 mile legs of the 300 miles in 4 1/2 hours with a half an hour rest in-between. “From a personal perspective, this ride was a tremendous positive influence for all of us who were able to participate in it”, stated Bob Taylor. “The weather (a light mist) at the beginning of the event could not dampen the enthusiasm and spirits of all who took part.” Team Fairfield was actually one of the few teams that had fan support as several employees came out to cheer on the team.

Every year more than half a million abused and neglected children are in need of safe, permanent, nurturing homes. That's where CASA steps in. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was created in 1977 to make sure the abuse and neglect these children originally suffered at home doesn't continue as abuse and neglect at the hands of the system. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. The result is that a child is placed into a safe, loving home where he/she can thrive. It is the CASA vision to provide a volunteer for each and every abused and neglected child who needs one.

The CASA program looks out for the best interest of more than 300 children in Tippecanoe County. When finances are a limiting factor, the CASAs for Kids Funds ensure that these children can participate in enrichment activities. CASA promote and support quality volunteer representation for children to provide each child a safe, permanent, nurturing home.

“Fairfield’s participation provided a boost to our reputation in the community”, said Don McDole. “The CASA was a great ride. We were able to get together as a team outside of our normal work environment for a good cause that helps under privileged children in the Lafayette community”.

Fairfield Responds to Community Fire Alarm - 8/1/2007

LAFAYETTE, IN, August 2007: Had it not been for the quick actions of Oerlikon Fairfield, one of the Lafayette Fire Department’s engines would have been out of commission until the end of August.

Around July 25, broken teeth on a gear controlling Quint 1/Engine 1’s ladder threatened to sideline the vehicle until a replacement part could be delivered five weeks later. Instead, the fire department approached Fairfield Manufacturing Inc., a Lafayette company that manufactures gears and drive assemblies.

Fairfield made and delivered a replacement gear providing a spare to the fire department in two days. “If they hadn’t (handled) things, we’d still be sitting here with a fire truck that wasn’t of much use to us,” said Tim Bullis, the fire department’s director of Fleet Maintenance. The broken gear teeth threatened to limit the ability of Quint 1 to respond to the cities emergencies, Bullis explained. Without the replacement, it of could prevented the 75-foot ladder from turning to reach someone in a burning building, or could cause the ladder to get stuck in place while suspended over a fire.

Each of the gears would have cost about $700 for the fire department to buy, Bullis added. But because of the quick response to our request and Fairfield’s community involvement, the gears were provided as a generous donation.

Representatives of Fairfield were reluctant to talk about the company’s role in the repair effort. “If we get the opportunity to do something locally, we just want to do it and not make a big deal out of it,” said John Strickland, vice president of marketing and strategic planning for Fairfield. He said the company pulled a few people aside to work on the gears without disrupting the company’s normal operations. The company normally manufactures pinion gears, he said, but not ones of the sizes the fire department needed. The two gears Fairfield made for the fire department were about 4.9 inches in diameter. Once the gears were delivered it was up to the fire departments to install one in Quint 1 — a considerable undertaking, according to Bullis. “It’s great that Fairfield helped us and great that we had guys qualified to fix it,” Bullis said about installing the gear.

Fairfield, which usually sends its gears across the country, was happy to help someone local, Strickland said. “Quite honestly, any time that we can be of service to the community in a situation like that, we take the time to do that,” Strickland said.

Newest Planetary Drive Model Completes Excel Family - 5/20/2005

Fairfield Manufacturing Co. has developed the third and final model in its Excel family of Torque-Hub planetary gear drives. The Excel series, which debuted in 2003, is designed to provide a compact, versatile and highly efficient planetary final drive suitable for a wide range of mobile construction, industrial and off-highway equipment applications.

The new 18000 series Excel Drive is the largest member of the Excel line with a maximum torque capacity of 160,000 lb.in. The 18000 planetary joins the existing 7000 (60,000 lb.in.) and 11000 (160,000 lb.in.) series units.

One of the significant features for the Excel series planetaries is their ability to cover an extremely wide application range within the three frame sizes. Flexibility is provided by the ability to use similar internal gear sets for the same ratios across all configurations of a particular series. Not only does this provide an advantage to Fairfield in terms of ease of manufacturing, but it also simplifies parts and service inventories.

"The key element is that the entire Excel family can be applied on a particular machine group as the machines increase in size and torque requirements," noted John Easton, manager, new product development at the Lafayette, IN - headquartered company. "You can simply put a small, medium, and large drive for your small, medium and large machines."

"The consolidation of parts inherently presents an advantage in manufacturing costs," Easton added. "The advantage to service/repair is similar in the sense that fewer spare parts are needed to repair ratios across different configurations."

Like its smaller kin, the Excel 18000 drive offers double and triple reduction ratios from 15:1 to 132:1 and can be specified with Fairfiled's integral Torque-Lock brakes. It can accept SAE B, SAE C or cartridge motor inputs - integral and cartridge motor sections are supplied by Sauer-Danfoss - and all of the Excel drives are available with an optional disengage feature that allows free-wheeling and towing.

Depending on the configuration, the Excel 18000 series drive is 11.16 in. long and weighs 230 lb. The 7000 series units are - again, depending on configuration - 8.86 in. long and 90 lb., while the 11000 series drives are 10.17 in. long and 170 lb.

The Excel 18000 is expected to go into production about mid-year, the company said. The 7000 series is in full production in Lafayette and uses some gearing sourced from the company's Fairfield Atlas Ltd. operation in India. More than 20,000 units have been shipped to date, the company said. The 11000 series drives, which debuted in late 2003, are ramping up toward full production from current levels of more than 2000 units per year.

Now in it's 86th year, Fairfield Manufacturing Co. is one of the world's largest independent producers of custom gears and gear products and power transmission components. Along with its custom gear work, the company builds a range of Torque -Hub branded products and accessories for wheel, shaft output, spindle and swing drive applications.
